In English: About Sandnes Folkedanslag

Sandnes Folkedanslag was founded in August 1981 which means that we can celebrate our 40th birthday in 2021. The group is located in Sandnes, a city on the southwest coast of Norway.
The main purpose of Sandnes Folkedanslag is to use Norwegian folk dance traditions and emphasize on the folk dance traditions from our own area of the country.

In addition to dance accompanied by an instrument, we also dance where all dancers are singing. We call this ‘songdans’ and is performed without any instrument.

Dancing is primarily a visual performance and our traditional costumes, called ‘bunad’, are therefore an important part of the performance. Every district in Norway has at least one original costume, so our country has a large variety of costumes.

It is a tradition to wear the costume from the region of your birth, not the region where you live. It is therefore quite a mix from many districts outside Rogaland among the members of the team.

The team has about 50 active members aged 60 – 80 years and is rather active with weekly training. Every second year we travel to an international festival. In August 2019 we visited Romania and the festival “Golden Fish” in Tulcea.

Normally we are using one musician playing the Norwegian variant of fiddle called Hardingfele.
The Hardingfele has 8 strings, not 4 like an ordinary fiddle.

In addition we also use accordion orchestra.
